The European Investment Bank (EIB), the world’s largest multilateral lender and major provider of climate finance, is holding a public consultation on its energy lending policy which was last revised/adopted in 2013.
On June 14th 2018, the European Commission (DG DEVCO and ECHO) and the European External Action Services (EEAS) launched their proposed Regulation for external action funding in the next EU Multiannual Financial Framework.
CAN Europe, has applied to the European General Court to intervene in the People’s Climate Case – a case in which families and youth have challenged the EU in order to protect their fundamental rights from the insufficiency of the EU’s 2030 greenhouse gas emission reduction target. Through this intervention, CAN Europe aims to increase the pressure on the EU to live up to its Paris Agreement responsibilities.
Late 2017, the European Commission established specific Investment Windows of the Guarantee fund in the European External Investment Plan. This will be the channel through which investments on specific issues and themes will be made. Together with NGOs, CAN Europe has developed and provided analysis and recommendations to the EU on how the Investment Windows can deliver on climate and sustainable development objectives.
The EU’s current Adaptation Strategy was launched in 2013 with the intention to scale up the European Union’s resilience to the growing impacts of climate change that it is facing. The Strategy is the first attempt to set out EU-wide adaption and climate resilience and it sets a solid precedence for a more collective, coordinated and transboundary approach towards addressing climate impacts in Europe. However, further efforts are needed across Europe to address the challenges posed by a fast-changing climate.
CAN Europe has contributed a submission on "How the State can make Ireland a leader in tackling climate change" sent out by the Citizens’ Assembly of Ireland.
CAN Europe together with Transparency International is representing the developed country CSO network towards the Global Environmental Facility (GEF) which funds environment, climate and sustainability projects all over the world.
CAN Europe contributed today to the mid-term evaluation of the Connecting Europe facility (CEF).
Submissions to EU consultation on External Development will be used to inform the way forward on the revision of the European Consensus on Development and other external aspects of 2030 Agenda implementation. The consultation seek views on how development policy, in the context of EU external action as foreseen by the Lisbon Treaty, should respond to the range of landmark 2015 summits and conferences, and also to the rapid changes happening in the world.
