EU leaders ignore European Parliament’s call for more climate ambition in the future EU budget

Financing the transition

Today EU leaders discussed the future EU budget after 2020 at an informal European Council meeting.

In reaction to the outcome of this informal discussion, Markus Trilling, finance and subsidies policy coordinator at Climate Action Network (CAN) Europe said: “Today’s silence from European leaders on EU budget’s responsibility to stop climate change is worrying. It demonstrates the disconnection between the European citizens who are in favour of more funds for climate action, and European Heads of State and Government neglecting the EU budget’s potential for delivering on higher climate ambition.”
