Press Releases

In a joint statement published yesterday, European affairs ministers of France, Germany, and Poland recalled the EU’s commitment to updating its Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) - the bloc’s 2030 climate target - “in good time” before COP26 which is taking place in November this year.
Now the European Commission needs to accelerate its work to present a proposal as soon as possible and ahead of the June European Council at the latest.

In reaction to yesterday’s Weimar declaration, Wendel Trio, Director of Climate Action Network (CAN) Europe said:

“Tackling the climate emergency requires the EU to lead the way in upping international climate ambition well before COP26 in November, the international deadline by which all countries have to submit new 2030 climate targets. This means the EU has to come up with an agreed higher target before the EU-China summit in September, as this will be an important avenue to trigger other big emitters to raise their game.”

“It is good to see Member States, including Poland, calling for the revision of the 2030 target to be well in time. The European Commission must therefore speed up its work. It has had four years to come up with a revision and must deliver its proposal well before the June European Council if it is serious about its Green Deal promises.”
