EU governments recognise EU budget’s green potential

EU environment ministers gathered in Brussels today at an Environment Council. On this occasion, 14 EU environment and climate ministers who are members of the Green Growth Group released a statement calling for more climate spending and mainstreaming in the future EU budget.

In reaction to the statement, Markus Trilling, finance and subsidies policy coordinator at Climate Action Network (CAN) Europe said: "We welcome today’s statement from European environment ministers on the important role the future EU budget should play to enhance climate action all over Europe. By increasing the spending target for climate action and ruling out any possible funding for fossil fuel activities, the future EU budget will serve higher climate ambition and unleash the very promising green potential.”

“Now the European Commission has a clear mandate to bring the future EU budget in line with the Paris Agreement in its proposal to be published the beginning of May.”
