Press Releases

EU Environment Ministers meeting in Brussels next Tuesday, 28th February aim to reach an agreement on the revision of the Emission Trading System (ETS) for the next decade.

The reform was supposed to turn the ETS into a strong climate protection instrument that helps the EU cut greenhouse gas emissions in line with the Paris Agreement. Instead, the reforms on the table set the ETS up for another decade of failure.

On Friday, 24 February CAN Europe organized an online press briefing to brief reporters about the state of play of the ETS negotiations. We heard from Wendel Trio, Director of Climate Action Network (CAN) Europe, Agnes Brandt, Senior EU Policy Officer at Carbon Market Watch and Juliette de Grandpré, EU climate and energy policy expert at WWF Germany.

Our speakers provided an in-depth analysis of the EU countries positions and the likely outcomes of the Environment Council. They also explain what a genuine “Paris Agreement compatible” ETS reform would look like and what other measures countries could take in case the process does not deliver the necessary level of ambition.
